Are Your Phone Contacts Safe?

Headed out the door for a night on the town, Tim* did not notice the battery on his smartphone was running low. Being raised in a small town, he seldom thought twice about leaving valuables in his unlocked car. Leaving his phone plugged in, he stopped at a friend’s house to say hello. He stayed a little longer than expected, but what does he have to worry about?

Tim sauntered back to his car, popped open the door and shot out a glance to locate his phone. Not immediately seeing it, he looked around assuming it must have fallen, but it was not plugged in… His phone, more importantly his phone contacts, were missing.

Television stations across the map have reported increasing numbers of cell phones being stolen. Smartphones are of particular interest to thieves. Personal information of all sorts is lying there for the taking. Smartphone users frequently remain logged in to various apps and social networks, so even if the intention is not to steal personal or contact information someone may snatch your phone simply to wreak havoc.

Naturally, Tim reported the incident to his cell phone carrier. The thief actually made calls from his phone. He felt so violated. Everything was on his phone, but at least he could get his phone back, right? He logically assumed the company would use tracking devices to locate his phone. The only response the company provided was, “So, will you be coming in to purchase a new phone?” His company was completely unsympathetic to his situation, stating there was nothing they would do. Furious, he canceled service.

Tim called a member of the Updentity team asking what platforms the apps run on. Sure, the cell phone company provided a backup and restore service, but he would never use that company again. His contacts were lost forever.

The Updentity service is not specific to a particular mobile phone company. The Updentity Web App stores the backups from your smartphone allowing you to restore your contacts as needed. You will have access to view, update and restore contacts anywhere Internet service is available.

Crowdsourcing, One of Many Contact Update Features

We’re often asked how the Updentity contact maintenance system is able to update contact information. Is there a group of elves gathering contact information? No. Have psychics been hired to notify the system that someone’s contact information has changed? No. Do we have a cell phone company insider inputting contact details into the system? No. The Updentity software has many options available to provide you with the most up-to-date contact information. One option you can take advantage of is use of a crowdsourcing platform.

Crowdsourcing technology has been around for a number of years. The term was first made buzzworthy in 2006 by Jeff Howe, contributing editor to Wired. Crowdsourcing is the use of a community, whether it is as small as a high school class or as large as the population of the whole world, to accomplish a large or difficult task in smaller, simpler increments. You are likely quite familiar with crowdsourcing especially if you have ever used wikis, forums or something from the open source community. Businesses have recognized the value of crowdsourcing and Bashpole Software has taken this technology to the next level by using crowdsourcing to take on the task of updating contact information.

Whether you back up contacts, sync contacts or simply use your favorite email address book, your contacts are likely already a part of the online environment. These sources, however, are typically without one very important feature; they lack the ability to notify you that your contact information is incorrect. The Updentity system makes crowdsourcing capabilities available to you by saving you time, effort and money you previously spent trying to keep contact information fresh.

Safeguard Time and Money

“Where are all of our customer contact data files?” asks a panic stricken small business owner. The office manager mumbles to her employer that they had all been destroyed due to a virus attack on the computer system. The office manager had been digging through the office for the last couple of hours trying to salvage any remnants of customer contact information that might be lurking on old hard-copies from last year.

Understaffed and at the height of the busy season, this business will be financially suffering as a result of this catastrophe. With as often as people change their phone numbers, email addresses and relocate their staff will be spending a tremendous amount of time attempting to contact their customers as a result of this data loss. They do not have time to re-enter the contact information let alone allocate additional time to update contacts.

This business, as with many businesses, dedicates a considerable amount of time and resources to ensuring their customer contact information is accurate. Business slows while efforts are made to determine what contact information is current. The Updentity system will notify you when information is incorrect. In the above business situation, use of the Updentity system would have freed time allowing the office manager to take necessary precautions to safeguard their system. This business is now faced with excessive downtime while they attempt to restore contacts with their latest, outdated backup. If they had used the maintenance capabilities of the Updentity software, they could have seamlessly restored customer contact information with the latest contact updates.
